Yiannis Ritsos is one of the great Greek poets of the twentieth century. His poem Moonlight Sonata was considered one of his most important works. Today, Greek composer Stavros Xarhakos gives it new impetus, with his latest music arrangement set to this great poem.

In long poems like his celebrated Romiosyni (1947), Moonlight Sonata (1956) and most of his later volumes, Ritsos writes with compassion and hope, celebrating the life, toil, and dignity of the common man in an unadorned and direct language. In 1967, Ritsos was arrested again by the Greek junta and exiled, and was prohibited from publishing Notable works by Ritsos include Tractor (1934), Pyramids (1935), Epitaphios (1936), Vigil (1941–1953), Romiosini (1954) and 18 short songs of the bitter Motherland (18 λιανοτράγουδα της πικρής πατρίδας) (1973).
